General Manager: Emily Hobhouse Museum in Cornwall (UK)

Role Overview & Responsibilities

The Emily Hobhouse Museum to be opened in St Ives, Cornwall (UK), has an exciting opportunity for a General Manager. The role includes overseeing the museum experience, kitchen garden and restaurant.

Requirements:

• A qualification in museum (or similar) management, business or hospitality
• Interest in South African history
• Relevant experience in guest facilities, restaurant management or food production
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, also presentation skills
• Fluent in English and Afrikaans
• Ability to manage a team
• Some experience of financial management
• Enthusiasm and the ability to maintain high standards under pressure

Responsibilities:

• Building and leading a team of museum personnel across various departments (exhibitions, restaurant, garden, maintenance)
• Creating a pleasant guest experience
• Upkeep of museum installations, some technically advanced
• Management of restaurant team
• Managing site maintenance, including gardens
• Defining long-term goals, developing business models, and implementing them
• Building on employee strengths
• Managing suppliers and community relations
• Running the museum’s operations and budget
